A piano/vocal duo from New York who clearly take inspiration from their home town, The Humble Grapes have released new single ‘Brooklyn Bridge‘.
The duo, comprising David Kaufman (piano) and Brie Capone (singer), write songs which draw on pop, rock and soul tropes. This latest is at the gentler end of the scale, with the piano doing the heavy lifting in terms of instrumentation.
It’s always a good mark of a recording or a song if it manages to get close to capturing the immediacy of live performance. With ‘Brooklyn Bridge’ there is a real, live feel to proceedings which is really good to hear. The lack of vocal effects and the simple but effective piano sound are refreshing in an era of over-production. Of course, electronic touches have their place (The Killers use them well for example), but for this kind of laid back but feeling song writing, you need that real feel.
